The Complete Guide to Tallow Skincare for Postpartum

The Complete Guide to Tallow Skincare for Postpartum

Welcoming a new baby is beautiful—and a lot on your body. If your skin feels tender, dry, or just different right now, a simple, comforting routine can make a world of difference. This guide walks you through a gentle postpartum skincare plan using our MOO Mama collection: Postpartum Soak (Rest & Renew Sitz Bombs), Scar & Soothe Recovery Balm, and Latch Love Nipple Cream. All are small-batch, handcrafted in Florida with grass-fed tallow and thoughtfully chosen botanicals—made to soothe, nourish, and support without harsh additives.

Why tallow for postpartum skin?

  • Skin-compatible lipids: Grass-fed tallow’s fatty acid profile is similar to your skin’s natural sebum, which helps replenish moisture and support the barrier.
  • Comfort-forward: Tallow blends beautifully with botanicals like calendula and chamomile to calm the look of irritation and keep delicate skin feeling soft.
  • Minimalist & non-toxic: Short, recognizable ingredient lists that keep things simple during a season when simple is best.

A gentle routine (Weeks 0–6)

Morning

  • Rinse as needed and pat dry—no vigorous scrubbing.
  • Apply Scar & Soothe Recovery Balm to perineal area as directed by your provider. For C-section births, wait until the incision is fully closed and you’ve received clearance to begin topical care.
  • Use Latch Love Nipple Cream after a shower or feed to keep skin comfortable.

Mid-day touch-ups

  • Reapply Latch Love after feeds, and dab Scar & Soothe post-bathroom routine as needed for comfort (external use only).

Evening wind-down

  • Enjoy a warm Postpartum Soak (sitz bath) for 15–20 minutes to relax and soften delicate skin. Follow with a light layer of Scar & Soothe where needed.

Tip: Keep a clean, soft cloth for gentle pat-drying. Friction is the enemy right now—be kind to your skin.

How to use (Cesarean): Begin only after your incision is fully closed and your provider says topical care is okay. Start with a rice- to pea-sized amount and apply with clean, dry hands. Ingredient spotlight

  • Grass-fed tallow: Rich in skin-loving lipids (stearic/oleic acids) to nourish and cushion.
  • Calendula: Traditionally used to comfort the look of redness on delicate skin.
  • Chamomile: Known for its gentle, soothing character—ideal for sensitive areas.
  • Jojoba oil (chamomile-infused): A skin-mimicking wax ester that helps seal in moisture without heavy residue.
  • Shea butter & cocoa butter: Emollient support for softness and flexibility.
  • Beeswax: Adds occlusive protection to help keep hydration where you want it.

Safety notes (please read)

  • Check with your provider before beginning any postpartum care, especially with stitches, tears, or surgical incisions.
  • Patch test first: Apply a tiny amount to the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
  • For C-section care: Do not use on open incisions. Begin only when fully closed and cleared by your provider.
  • Watch-outs: If you notice increased redness, warmth, unusual discharge, fever, or escalating pain, stop use and contact your provider promptly.
  • Feeding note: Latch Love is made with food-friendly oils and waxes; most parents don’t remove it before feeding. If you prefer, a quick wipe is okay.
